I’ve been personally touched by the challenges of Parkinson’s disease (PD).
This year my focus is on exercise for the voice and throat muscles - vocal exercises and singing. 80% of all people with PD will experience loss or softness of voice, trouble swallowing, facial muscle weakness, drooling and choking. All these issues lead to an inability to communicate resulting in frustration, apathy and social isolation. Proactively, the SongShine Music Therapy Program can help keep the voice strong.
Endorsed by Parkinson's Society of BC (PSBC) this program focuses on breathing techniques, voice exercises, diction and enunciation, speaking loudly, swallowing and tongue exercises, and facial expressions. Done regularly, these exercises result in increased vocal range and control, better diction, improved swallowing techniques and good posture utilizing lung capacity. In addition to the above benefits, music and rythym enhance cognition and balance leading to richer social interactions and less falls.
Please join me in donating to PSBC so that this and other valuable programs can be offered to people living with PD. Many of the progrms offered by PSBC are online and can be accessed from their website. Thank you in advance for your contribution, large or small, your support is gratefully appreciated.
