Here we are at the beginning of August and I hardly remember what I was doing yesterday, never mind way back in February when the "V" word started to emerge and was given a real name by March ~ COVID 19! Terms like "new normal", "social distancing", "quarantine in place" weren't even part of our vocabulary. What hasn't changed is that PD ~ short for Parkinson's Disease (you knew that, right?), is still with me. No magic wand, cure, or vaccine yet, although I'm so grateful I have access to specific drugs that help me mitigate my symptoms as I move through each day.
It's been seven years since I was diagnosed and I'm still able to continue to lead a full and productive life. Nevertheless, PD is a progressive degenerative disease and I admit that some days it's a little more present than I'd like IT to be. I try kicking IT to the curb all the time and although there are moments when IT wins, at least I win most parts of most days!
With so many of our support options closed down because of COVID, I, and the 13,500 others with PD throughout the province, find it more challenging to be consistent with exercise and other support activities. PSBC ~ Parkinson Society of BC (you knew that, right?), has been amazing in designing a myriad of opportunities that members can access virtually. There is something for everyone: weekly webinars on a wide variety of PD specific topics, updates on research, a book club to encourage ongoing dialogue and community, virtual activities such as exercise, dance, voice, yoga, stretching classes, and much more. If you want to be REALLY impressed, go to their website at parkinson.bc.ca.
This year our annual province-wide fundraiser ~ SuperWalk ~ to held on the September 12 & 13 weekend is . . . you guessed it . . . VIRTUAL.
The staff at PSBC has gone above and beyond to make this walk interesting and accessible to everybody wishing to participate.
My Personal Donation Page is also linked to the Good Vibrations Women's Team, so anything you donate gives our Team credit as well. FYI ~ the Good Vibrations ladies have gathered a few times in a public park, safely distanced of course. We get great value from sharing our knowledge, notes, hurdles, and hurrahs. We lost one dear friend Agnes Parke recently. She and her family have been wonderful supporters of PSBC.
SuperWalk is the most important fundraiser of the year and PSBC needs your support more than ever to be able to carry on providing the programs, support services, educational resources and advocacy that people with Parkinson's, their families and carepartners rely on. Any amount you can afford is deeply appreciated: $20 • $200 • $2000 • or anything in between! Your pledge of $20 or more is tax deductible and you will receive a tax receipt from PSBC. I encourage you not to procrastinate. With deep gratitude ~ Debbie
